Great southern stage run

Ultra runners from near and far raced in the second annual Great Southern Stage Run from Thursday, 16 November to Saturday, 18 November in the Great Southern Region of WA.

The 3-day event covered a 200km point-to-point course along sections of the Bibbulmun Track, from Walpole to Albany and gave way to 113 competitors who ran in relay teams whilst 4 solo runners entered the single entrant race (70km on Day 1; 74km on Day 2; and 58km on Day 3).

In the Women’s Solo, Kate Cush finished as 1st Female across the 3 days whilst Xiaolin Wang took out 1st Male in the Men’s Solo event (qualifying for the Everest 135 Extreme Race) finishing just 20 minutes overall behind Cush. Alan Fisher took 2nd Male and JianGuo Yang took 3rd Male.

HYSTERICAL CARNAGE BACKYARD ULTRA

South Australia’s Hysterical Carnage Backyard Ultra was held from Friday, 17 Nov in Loxton in a battle for the last one standing.

A big congratulations to AURA’s Margaret Hadley from Henley Brook, WA who took out the title following a total of 40 laps completed (268.40km). She has become the first official entrant to the Australian team for the 2024 Satellite World Championships, claiming the Silver Ticket.

Well done to all AURA members who raced at Hysterical, including David Patterson from Hamlyn Heights, Vic (30 laps, 201.30km), Anthony Parfilo from Gawler East, SA (26 laps, 174.46), Jennifer Ritossa from Myrtle Bank, SA (25 laps, 167.75km), Nancy Williams from Blackwood, SA (9 laps, 60.39km), Brad Halls from Sawyers Valley, WA (6 laps, 40.26km), Tamas Lorincz from Windsor Gardens, SA (4 laps, 26.84km) and Matthew Cook from Renmark West, SA (3 laps, 20.13km).

GSER

The Great Southern Endurance Run aka GSER kicked off on Friday, 17 November in Harrietville, Vic allowing entrants to venture into the mountains, summiting peaks and experiencing sections of the iconic Australian Alps Walking Track in the Victorian Alpine National Park.

On offer was a 100mi (22 finishers), 50mi (53 finishers), 56km (60 finishers) and 28km.

In the Women’s 100mi, top spots were awarded to Kate Macmunn (36:19:06), Zoe O’Meara (41:10:25) and Lisa Ryan (41:47:54) whilst in the Men’s 100mi, winners were named Baden Chapple (29:33:50), David Gatt (33:16:13) and Dave Sykes (33:17:46).

Congratulations to all our members who raced in the 100mi, including Katherine Macmillan from Kinglake West, Vic (43:40:59) who finished 4th Female and Scott Heckmann from Kellyville Ridge, NSW (46:24:45).

In the Women’s 50mi, winners were Marijke Walshe (13:31:46), Rachel Van Middeldyk (15:39:03) and Rania Beattie (16:10:05). In the Men’s 50mi, podium finishes went to Ben Burgess (12:03:57), Joel Laing (13:33:28) and Marc Longok (15:02:55).

Congratulations to AURA member Meredith Pretty from Sunbury, Vic who completed the 50mi in a great time of 25:29:20.

In the Women’s 56km, 1st Female went to Elly Jackson (7:38:24) whilst AURA’s very own Claire Healy from Yackandandah, Vic took 2nd Female with a fantastic time of 8:31:13. Megan Healy took 3rd Female (8:31:13).

In the Men’s 56km, AURA’s Thomas Dade from Mount Martha, Vic took 1st Male following a finish time of 6:39:06 whilst AURA member Nigel Hill from Bullengarook, Vic claimed 2nd Male with a time of 7:07:12. Tim Goddard took 3rdmale (7:14:16).

Well done to all our members who raced in the 56km, including Nadya Caminer from Watsons Bay, NSW (10:44:56), Peter Nelson from Newport, Vic (11:29:21) and Joe Hujs from Crestwood, NSW (11:54:03).

STROMLO RUNNING FESTIVAL

The 14th Stromlo Running Festival was held on Saturday, 18 November in Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra. For the ultra runners, there was a 50km distance (185 finishers) whilst other options included a 30km, 15km, 10km, 5km and 2.5km.

In the Men’s 50km, AURA’s very own Michael Daly from Queanbeyan, NSW took 1st Male with a winning finish of 3:34:01. Morgan Payne took 2nd Male (3:45:50) and Scott Cummins took 3rd Male (3:49:22).

In the Women’s 50km, top spots were awarded to Patricia McKibbin (4:11:05), Joasia Zakrzrewski (4:16:40) and Jessica Carroll (4:17:51).

Congratulations to our members who ran in the 50km, including Lindsay Hamilton from Forde, ACT (4:57:02), Piera Kohout from Cremorne, NSW (5:23:37), Geoffrey Langhans from Happy Valley, SA (5:34:05), Gretchen Smith from Barton, ACT (5:35:33), Nicole Siddon from Canberra, ACT (5:41:33), Greg Wallace from Oatley, NSW (5:43:40), Karen Cheung from Coogee, NSW (6:09:52), Debbie Maher from Wamboin, NSW (6:36:11) and Brent Ford from Gungahlin, ACT (7:37:30).

AURA’s Jason Kell from Perth is heading off to Norway to compete in a 24hr track event from 25-26 November in the Bislett Stadium, Oslo.
