Journey to 100: How to run your best 100km ultramarathon and love it
Nick Muxlow, Author

If you’re a collector of running books (and let’s face it, some of you out there are, I know you are!), then it’s time to get your hands on Journey to 100: How to run your best 100km ultramarathon – and love it. Author Nick Muxlow, who hails from SA, is an experienced ultra runner with winning titles to his name (State Trail Championships and State Ultramarathon Championships) and has moved onto coaching, now helping runners unlock their potential.

If you’re ready to move on to the next level of ultra running, then Journey to 100 is the perfect read. You don’t actually have to have your sights set on a 100km race to read the book; it’s quite relevant to anyone looking at enhancing their ultra running experience, preparing and training for any ultra distance, or for those who are looking at rekindling their fire.

As I opened up the pages to hit the first few paragraphs, already the introductory chapter resonated with me. There was a connection, I was feeling it, with the story being told about a woman named Sarah who had just DNF’d for the first time, and it kept the pages turning.

Nick writes eloquently, yet it’s straight forward and to the point. There’s no fluffing around when it comes to getting his agenda across – and mind you, he’s got a lot of points to relay to readers, because quite frankly, ultra running has a lot of factors involved.

Sometimes, topics in Journey to 100 become scientific, but to be prepared and train well for the distances we challenge ourselves with, the science behind running needs to be taken into effect. There’s no such thing as winging it; it’s dangerous. Journey to 100 teaches you how to successfully train, how to implement specific principles, and how to invest your training time wisely to get the best results.

Nick goes through the various elements of ultra running, including training, pacing, nutrition, tapering, recovery, and medical pre-screenings, which is critical to look at, especially if you’re focused on an A Race.

Everyone on any ultra level, whether you’re training for your first long distance event or are an old pro looking to rehash information, Journey to 100 is definitely worth picking up.
