DELIRIOUS W.E.S.T BRINGS 200 MILES TO THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

There’s a new endurance race on the AURA calendar – in fact, on the Australia-wide event calendar, and it’s already attracted a fair few out-of-towners who will get to experience the Aussie environment at its optimum.

The Delirious W.E.S.T (Western Endurance Scenic Trail) 200 Miler will kick off its inaugural event on February 20 in the South West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia, where participants will get the phenomenal opportunity to run almost entirely along the Bibbulman Track – from the old logging settlement of Northcliffe to the historic port city of Albany.

The great land of Oz actually has a decently acceptable amount of 100 milers spread throughout the year, but when it comes to the extended distance of 200 miles, us Aussies fall a little bit short. Well, most of the world does too – they’re slim pickings, let’s be honest. And until this year, Queensland’s Nerang 200 Miler has been the only 200 miler on the Australian calendar, taking runners on a journey along a 25km loop course and with 895-metres of elevation gain per 25km loop.

To those who are yet to see and experience the Delirious W.E.S.T course, she reveals the Bibbulmun Track offers distinctive and contrasting landscapes and vegetation, from coastal cliffs and beaches through to ancient forests on a combination of single track, fire trails and open beaches.

“The first 100km or so from Northcliffe to Mandalay Beach is relatively flat, and passes through karri forest and swamps; things start to get interesting after Mandalay Beach where the course first hits the coast, beaches and dunes before diving back inland to more karri forests and swamps through Walpole,” she reveals.

“The absolute highlight though is next, through the Giant Tingle Tree forest for 30kms or so before diving back to the coastal landscape amblings at Conspicuous Cliffs for the remainder of the course – only briefly drifting inland again to take in the beautiful vistas over Mt Hallowell.

“Much of the course, and I believe the most challenging aspect, is comprised of every imaginable type of sand and on the elevated forested sections, it feels luxurious to be on solid ground.

“Sometimes the track meanders and coils back on itself instead of taking a straight line, and feels like the wanderings of a madman, but the beauty of the design of ‘The Bibb’, as us West Aussies call it, is you get to experience the full spectrum of diverse magnificence of the Great Southern.

“Delirious W.E.S.T is going to be a great adventure.”
