Australian National Team selection panel

AURA is pleased to announce the appointment of Jo Blake and David Eadie to the national team selection panel.

Jo Blake is a current panel member and we welcome his reappointment.

David Eadie is a new member and comes with a vast knowledge of ultra running. David has been an Australian representative and three time 100km national champion.

David Eadie & Jo Blake

Australian 100km championships 2015 - Gold Coast June 7th.

A strong field was presented with good race conditions, as they set off on the four looped course from Burleigh. A world championship qualifier was in the minds of the leaders and this ensured a fast pace from the gun. At the half way point a lead group of three men had formed, Dion Finocchiaro , Scott Britain and Francesco Ciancio, all travelling well, with David Bailey running strong in fourth.

With the ladies being led out hard by Marita Eisler, followed by Kirstin Bull chasing hard, whilst Nikki Wynd and Jodie Oborne were not to far behind.

The leaders were not the only ones setting a fast pace, with seven other men running sub 8 hr pace at this stage.

Scott Britain broke away for a strong win, in a time of 7:34 to take out the national title. Recording the second fastest time ever at the Gold Coast event. He was chased home by David Bailey who ran a well judged race to finish in 8:03, whilst Kevin Muller secured third, by a mere 43 seconds from Mal Gamble.

43 seconds was again the slightest of margins, as Marita Eisler ran a superb 8:00:43 to take the woman's title for the fourth consecutive time. Kirstin Bull's debut 100 km, produced a second place in a very impressive 8:25, with Nikki Wynd finding herself on yet another podium with a well paced 8:54.

New committee roles

AURA is very please announce and thank the following volunteers for taking on new positions within the organisation:

Elizabeth Bennett - Ultramag editor:

Elizabeth has been AURA's Media Officer for many years and is one of AURA's ACT state/territory representatives. She has been a marathon/ultramarathon runner for 30 years. For those interested in formal running credentials and personal bests, Elizabeth is a previous Australian team representative at the World Mountain Running Marathon Championships, has a personal best marathon of 2.59.38, and a personal best 100km of 9.47. She also has extensive experience as a hardened ultra marathon crew member including having crewed at the last four C2Ks.

In terms of academic background, Elizabeth has a BA (Hons) and a Masters in Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning). As if that's not enough, she is currently completing a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics - just for fun.

Elizabeth works as a rehabilitation case manager at the same time as running her own writing and editing business, Working Words. Most of her writing and editing contracts are for health, science or sport publications, and the odd PhD thesis or two.

Collectively, Elizabeth's running background and professional experience makes her a good fit for the job of editing Ultramag. However, like everyone else, Elizabeth is time poor and so please help her to do a good job for AURA by contributing to Ultramag if/when she contacts you.

Jeff Gray - Webmaster:

Jeff Gray is a web developer who works at Media on Mars and as the webmaster for a WA University. Jeff was a keen runner as a schoolboy, had 20 years off running, and rediscovered the sport at the age of 37. Since then he has run around 20 marathons and begun to dabble in ultras. Personal highlights include crewing on C2K and running the Aalborg Brutal Marathon in Denmark. Jeff lives in WA with his wife, 2 sons and dog, and loves to travel, learn languages and house dad."

Robert Donkersloot - Facebook and news updates:

Rob divides his time between ultra running and working as a Digital
Strategist for Sydney based Digital Marketing Agency Blackglass, as well as consulting in the same role to Ashley and Martin. He specialises in search marketing and social media. As well, he has created and manages a number of his own running related websites including http://www.runningforbeginners.com/ and http://ultraruntv.com/

Rob has been an active member of AURA for around five years and as well as having completed numerous ultras including Coast to Kosciuszko and Glasshouse 100 Miler, he is the Race Director of his own event in his home state of Western Australia, the Kep Ultra: http://www.kepultra.com/

Each of the above and the rest of the committee of AURA can be contacted per the details on the website at http://www.aura.asn.au/contact_us.html

The ladies team came sixth, whilst the men came eighth.

Webmaster position available

AURA is disappointed to inform its membership that Justin Scholz has stepped down from the role of Webmaster after a two year period of volunteer service in the role.  Justin’s departure will coincide with the end of the 2014 calendar year and thus provides an opportunity for a new person to fill this important position from the start of the 2015 season.

In Justin’s time AURA has improved its website and the manner and consistency in which event information and results have been shared through the ultra-running community.  In addition to the website itself, this has extended to monthly membership emails and regular updates on the AURA Facebook page.  Justin, both during his time as Vice President and Webmaster has been instrumental in the development of policies and internal processes aimed at increasing participation in, and strengthening performances in ultra running in this country.  At all times during his tenure, Justin has acted with consistency and integrity and provided specialist services in a professional and exceptionally timely manner.  AURA will feel the loss of Justin’s organisational and general management skills, and will remain grateful for the contribution he has made both formally over the past two years, and also the informal contribution to World and Commonwealth Championships teams in the three years preceding that.

AURA would now welcome contact from any member that may be interested in assuming part or all of the webmaster, Facebook, email and other similar tasks that were undertaken by Justin.  To express interest, please contact president Robert Boyce by phone 0417 557 902 or email president@aura.asn.au

She turned to ultra running later in her sporting career with highlights including a 50km World age group record and Gold in the Commonwealth 100km Championships in Keswick. 50km National Championship Results

Congratulations to Barry Keem and Natasha Fraser who became the 50km National Champions for 2014 at the recent Centennial Park event. Barry and Natasha now add to a prestigious list of prior champions, all of which can be found on the National Champions page of the website.

For Natasha, this was a third consecutive championships win, and like Marita Eisler in the 100km championships recently it was the best time of those three consecutive wins. Those times have been 3:41:44 (2012), 3:39:06 (2013) and now 3:36:35.

With a further sense of deja vu, this was Barry Keem's first 50km National Championship title as it was for Macus Cockshutt in the 100km event. For Barry however, this was not the first time he has been crowned National Champion having achieved that accolade in the 2008 National Trail Championships.

Congratulations to Runners up Kieron Blackmore and Elouise Peach, and indeed to the third placegetters and all participants in the National Championships event.

The 2014 National Championships podium is as follows:

  1. Barry Keem 3:17:22
  2. Kieron Blackmore 4:22:05
  3. Wayne Gregory 5:12:47

  1. Natasha Fraser 3:36:35
  2. Elouise Peach 4:55:44
  3. Heather Dwyer 7:27:49

Full results of the 2014 event will be available from the event page when available.

100km National Team announced

AURA takes great pleasure in announcing the 100km team to represent at the World Championships in Doha in November. The full team is as follows:

Brendan Davis  (captain)
Andrew Heyden
Rick Cooke
Chris Truscott (added 3/9/14)

Marita Eisler
Nikki Wynd
Jodie Oborne
Kerrie Otto De Grancy

Additional team members may yet be added to the team in coming weeks.

2015/16 National Championship Hosting

Due to the addition of the New (long) Trail National Championship races, AURA is extending the hosting application deadline for all National Championships until 10 August, 2014.

Full details of the policy can be found in PL002 - AURA National Championships.

Applications remain open for the 2015/16 Championships and event organisers are encouraged to apply. Below are links to the relevant documentation:

The event organisers of selected events will be notified on or before 30 August 2014, with an official announcement to follow.

2014 World Championship 24 hour

The IAU have cancelled the 24 hour World Championships which were to be held in Taiwan in December this year. Below is a statement from the IAU:

"Cancellation of 2014 24 Hour IAU World Championships

It is with regret that the IAU must announce the cancellation of the 2014 24 Hour IAU World Championships. Unfortunately, for reasons beyond our control, the host organisers indicated that it would not be possible to continue with the event in 2014.

The IAU is aware of the dissapointed this will cause in the ultra distance community, especially after the cancellation of the IAU 100km World Championships in 2013.

It was with this in mind that the Executive Committee of the IAU recently met in Belgium to discuss the process by which championships are allocated in future, as well as the timing of the 100km and 24 Hour championships.

The decision was taken at that meeting to hold the World Championships for 100km and 24 Hours in alternating years. This will now commence in 2016. For 2014, the 100km World Championships are being held in Doha, Qatar in November this year and the next 24 Hour World Championships being held in Turin, Italy in April 2015.

At the same time, the application process to host the World Championships has been revised and soon applications will be called for the 2016-2018 Championships. Competition delegates from the IAU will be appointed for each event to ensure that the organisation is proceeding smoothly once a championship has been awarded to a host organiser. This, and other steps, will go a long way to removing the chance of last minute cancellation of events in future.

The IAU wishes to apologise for any inconvinience and disappointment caused by this cancellation, but we trust that the measures being put in place will prevent a recurrence.

Dirk Strumane
IAU President

IAU Records update:

The IAU have changed the date for which records will be "amalgamated" regardless of surface type to now commence in 2015. AURA will follow suit and allow records for all of 2014 on all surfaces.

The full IAU statement from the Executive Council meeting is below:

"IAU World Best Performances and ( WMA) World Age Best Performances – amalgamation of surfaces.
We had decided in Monaco, after careful consideration of the relevant statistics, that it was right to amalgamate the world best performances on track, road and indoors, with the best performance being the absolute best performance and recognised as such. The “surface” is probably less of a contributing factor in securing a good performance than many other factors in an event. This will now start in 2015 with performance lists for 2014 and before “frozen” at the end of the year ( or after any applications for 2014 best performances have been received). There will be more detail on this including the reasoning placed on the IAU website under results and statistics very soon."

The IAU website is http://www.iau-ultramarathon.org/

PL002 - National Championships

AURA has published a policy on the National Championships application and selection process.

New from 2015 will be the addition of a second trail championships. One National Championships will be for "short" trail, between 45km and 80km, with the second championships event being for a "long" trail over 90km.

Full details of the policy can be found in PL002 - AURA National Championships.

Applications remain open for the 2015/16 Championships and event organisers are encouraged to apply. Below are links to the relevant documentation:

A reminder that applications close 31 July 2014. The race directors of selected events will be notified on or before 30 August 2014, with an official announcement to follow.

24hr National Team Selection

The IAU recently announced that the 2014 World Championship 24 hour event will be held in Soochow, Taiwan on 6/7 December.

AURA is now opening applications for selection to the National 24 hour team.

Please review the selection criteria in AURA policy PL001 – International Team Selection for details of the selection process. To apply, please complete FM001 – International Team Application Form, which is also available on the policies page of the website.

Applications close 28 July 2014 with an initial team announcement to be made by 4 August 2014.

For further details generally, potential applicants are invited to contact Chairman of National Selectors Robert Boyce directly by email or by phone (0417 557 902).

100km National Championship Results

Congratulations to Marcus Cockshutt and Marita Eisler who became the 100km National Champions for 2014 at the recent Gold Coast 100km event. Marcus and Marita now add to a prestigious list of prior champions, all of which can be found on the National Champions page of the website.

Marita's was a particularly outstanding performance winning in the third fastest time in the last 12 years (bettered only by race record holder Jackie Fairweather in 2009 and Tressa Lindberg in 2012). It was also a third consecutive win for Marita and her 2014 time was the best of those three wins. In 2012 Marita managed 9:13:18 and 2013 her time was 8:47:44.

This was the first National Championships 100km victory for Marcus.

The 2014 National Championships podium is as follows:

  1. Marcus Cockshutt 8:17:31.58

Due largely to the inspiration of the Westfield Sydney-Melbourne races of the 1980s, AURA was formed in 1987 to foster and promote the sport of ultra running in Australia. AURA has evolved to become the Governing body for ultra running in Australia and is recognised as such by the IAAF, Athletics Australia, The Australian Sports Commission and the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU). AURA is charged with the responsibility for the ongoing development and the proper conduct of ultra running in Australia. This includes the sanctioning of races and maintenance of records and rankings. AURA offers assistance, advice and encouragement to Race Directors and to athletes, ranging from recreational to the elite.
