How long in existence: since 2003
History: The National 100km championships were first held at Shepparton in 1995 and 1996, but were then discontinued. The only other 100km race in Australia on a measured course at the time was the run leg of the ultra triathlon conducted by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team in Canberra on a 3.8km out and back course. The SCMT kindly allowed the National 100km championships to be held in conjunction with their event. However, the course was not conducive to achieving good results, with the run leg being held at night-time. Following an unsuccessful call for a race organiser to stage the race, AURA President Ian Cornelius took steps to resurrect the championships himself, with the first race being held at Runaway Bay, Qld on 12 July 2003. It was held at the same venue in 2004, 2005 and 2006, being switched to the beachfront course on the Gold Coast in 2007. In 2007 it was held on an out and back course of 25km each way. However, because of congestion at the southern end of the course resulting from the Wintersun Festival, the course was modified to turn at the halfway point, that is out 12.5km, back 12.5 km times four. This reduces the number of aid stations thus simplfying the logistics but allows the race to be conducted on an extremely picturesque course. Peter Hall of Victory Sports took over the organising of the race commencing June, 2009.
