coffs harbour to grafton ~ 83 km

Bawden Bridge over the Orara River, en route from Coffs Harbour to Grafton

Where: Coffs Harbour to Grafton alternating Grafton to Coffs every other year.

Grafton is located about 40 km due west of the coast and 625 km north-east of Sydney at the junction of the Pacific and Gwydir Highways. The city is bisected by the Clarence River which, for many years, proved a barrier to the connection of the city centre (on the northern bank) with Sydney. The Clarence (known to Europeans as the 'Big River' until 1840), with its tributaries - the Nymboida, the Orara, the Mann and the Coldstream - constitutes the largest river system on the northern NSW coast. Draining over two million hectares it contains over 100 islands, including Susan Island which lies between Grafton and South Grafton. With a population of 18,500, Grafton is the major settlement on the Clarence River and the commercial centre of an extensive agricultural and pastoral district.

Coffs Harbour is located on the coast south of Grafton and is a major port. Originally discovered by Captain John Korff (of the Bellingen Cedar carrier Brothers) as he sought safety from a storm which prevented him entering the river at Urunga. He named the place Korff's Harbour. This later was gazetted, through an unintentional misspelling, to Coffs Harbour and the name has remained ever since. Today, Coffs Harbour is considered one of the safest harbours between Newcastle and Brisbane. The city has a population of well over 60,000 and is world famous for its beaches, forest hinterlands, pastoral settings and the Solitary Islands Marine Reserve.
